چکیده

We propose using lotteries as an alternative payment mechanism through which to incentivize and recruit workers to microtasking. We present initial findings gained via experiments on Amazon Mechanical Turk and focus on discussing the benefits and potential pitfalls in employing a lottery-based payment mechanism for microtasking. lottery-based Payment Mechanism Over the last few years, paid microtasking, where workers complete small tasks for pennies at a time, has emerged as an alternate source of income for many people around the world. We introduce a alternative: lottery-based payments. In this payment mechanism, workers earn lottery tickets by completing microtasks. Each successfully completed task earns a ticket, hence completing more tasks gets them more tickets, thereby increasing their chance of winning. Payments may be monetary, or other material rewards such as tickets to music concerts or sport events, T-shirts, monthly bus passes and so on. In general, we assume an internal lottery is held solely amongst workers, though this need not be the case.

Condition-Task-Store: A Declarative Abstraction for Microtask-based Complex Crowd-sourcing

Microtasks have been widely adopted by many crowdsourcing platforms as a unit for human computation. Recently, tools to support programmers to implement complex crowdsourcing applications with microtasks have been proposed. One approach is to provide a library of functions that can be called by programs written in imperative programming languages. Another approach is to allow SQL queries to inv...

Real-Time Social Data Collection in Rural Bangladesh via a ‘Microtasks for Micropayments’ Platform on Android Smartphones

The advent of cheap smartphones in rural areas across the globe presents an opportunity to change the mode with which researchers engage hard-to-reach populations. In particular, smartphones allow researchers to connect with respondents more frequently than standard household surveys, opening a new window into important short-term variability in key measures of household and community wellbeing...

Eliciting Objective Probabilities via Lottery Insurance Games

Since utilities and probabilities jointly determine choices, event-dependent utilities complicate the elicitation of subjective event probabilities. However, for the usual purpose of obtaining the information embodied in agent beliefs, it is sufficient to elicit objective probabilities, i.e., probabilities obtained by updating a known common prior with that agent’s further information. Bayesian...

Do Lottery Payments Induce Savings Behavior? Evidence from the Lab∗

This paper presents the results of a laboratory experiment designed to investigate whether the option of a Prize Linked Savings (PLS) product alters the likelihood that subjects choose to delay payment. By comparing PLS and standard savings products in a controlled way, we find strong evidence that a PLS payment option leads to greater rates of payment deferral than does a straightforward inter...

HumorTools: A Microtask Workflow for Writing News Satire

Humor is a highly-valued human skill — a sign of intelligence and creativity. Humor creation is a long-standing problem in Artificial Intelligence, because it does not easily decompose and it cannot readily be defined or detected; indeed, many humans cannot readily create jokes. However, in our survey of advice from professional comedians, we found evidence that the humor-generation process can...
